Post-transfusion hepatitis: impact of non-A, non-B hepatitis surrogate tests. Canadian Post-Transfusion Hepatitis Prevention Study Group.
Canada has not introduced the non-A, non-B (NANB) surrogate marker tests (antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen and alanine aminotransferase) to screen donated blood. We evaluated the effect of NANB surrogate markers in reducing post-transfusion hepatitis in a prospective randomised intervention study. From 1988 to 1992, 4588 subjects were enrolled into two study groups that received allogenei...
متن کاملPost-transfusion hepatitis: a problem in Northern Ireland?
A retrospective analysis of post-transfusion hepatitis reported to us from 1980 through 1984 revealed 16 patients. We believe that this apparently low incidence is due to lack of notification and make a case for direct notification to us of any suspected cases. Disqualification of implicated blood donors is of prime importance in prevention of transfusion-associated hepatitis.

tions and hospital admissions (r=09; p<0 01). There was a tendency throughout the period, when the figures for whooping cough increased, for the number of notifications to increase proportionately more than the number of admissions. In the peak quarters of 1974 and 1978 there were 25 and 58 admissions and 159 and 666 notifications respectively. We studied Hospital Activity Analysis statistics f...
متن کاملPost-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis in Finland: a prospective study.
To study the frequency of post-transfusion non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis in Finland, we have followed prospectively 65 patients after open-heart surgery. The total number of transfused blood units was 652. Blood samples were obtained from the patients during the first 6 months after the operation and were studied for transaminase levels. The NANB diagnosis was based on exclusion of viral hepati...
متن کاملStrategies for the prevention of post-transfusion hepatitis.
Hepatitis is a common and potentially serious adverse effect of blood transfusion. A large number of strategies have been developed or proposed to reduce the incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH). The education of physicians regarding the risks of hemotherapy and the judicious use of blood must be the cornerstone of any substantial reduction in PTH. The use of volunteer rather than paid...
